U-RHYTHM BD
Circadian rhythms of metabolic biomarkers in bipolar
We are carrying out a research study to better understand how metabolism (bodily functions) changes over the course of a single day in people with bipolar. To do this, we will use the U-RHYTHM device, which can collect and store small biological samples from just underneath the skin of the belly. This device can be worn while carrying on with most routine activities and it does not require an overnight hospital stay.
-
Adults (over 16 years old) living in Scotland who
Have not been diagnosed with diabetes or other metabolic disorders;
Either have a diagnosis of bipolar or have no history of mental health conditions
If diagnosed with bipolar, have not had any depressive or manic episodes in the past 3 months
-
2x in-person visits to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh over 2 consecutive days:
Visit 1 (approx. 3 hours): questionnaires, psychiatric assessment, U-RHYTHM device applied
Between visits: Wearing the U-RHYTHM device for approximately 27 hours, answering questions about mood symptoms in an app
Visit 2 (approx. 1 hour): U-RHYTHM device removal, survey about experience of wearing the device
